Why Would Anyone Get a Fecal Transplant?

Film posted, and more info available, at National Geographic here: http://bit.ly/1dZAkP6 Lauren Giuntini developed a dangerous antibiotic-resistant Staph infection (MRSA) when she was 15 years-old. Powerful antibiotics eradicated the MRSA, but left her open to a dangerous intestinal infection called Clostridium difficile (C. diff). Lauren's C. diff infection and the battery of intense medical therapies her doctors used to treat it wreaked havoc on her daily life and her health, and none of the therapies worked. Two-years and 24-rounds of Vancomycin (a powerful broad spectrum antibiotic) later Lauren finally received the ok for treatment by Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT). This short film explains FMT, explores what's at stake with C. diff - now the most common hospital acquired infection in the US - and examines the reasons FMT, despite clear evidence for its superior cost and clinical effectiveness, remains a marginal treatment.
